Human beings have evolved over millions of years in the natural world, surrounded by organic shapes, curves, and the soothing presence of greenery. However, the modern built environment often lacks these natural elements, leading to a sense of stress and disconnection from nature. Studies in environmental psychology have shown that exposure to natural environments can have a calming effect on individuals, reducing stress levels and promoting relaxation.

Many teachers may not realize the negative impact that a rigid, cluttered, and unnatural classroom can have on children’s behavior, attention, and ability to learn. Additionally, sitting in desks for long periods of time and lack of movement can pose serious problems, yet very few public schools in the U.S. are taking action to address them. I believe it is crucial to prioritize children’s well-being and make necessary changes in classroom design to support their learning and development. In this article, we will discuss the importance of creating a natural classroom and the benefits it can bring to students, teachers, and the learning environment.
